Costs
New a set up will run you around $8000.00. The unit and wing, along with a helmet, Altimeter, and Radio. Other gadgets can be aquired like a vario for rate of climb, GPS for cross country flying, and various other items. The training is around $1500.00 if you have equipment, Or $1000.00 if you purchase equipment through us. Used equipment is also available, but we recommend using our expertise to help you make the right decision, And save allot of headaches in the long run. Different pilots need different equipment. Powered Paragliding
Yes Powered Paragliding is the safest form of ultralight piloting in the world. It has been around for almost 15 years now and Is very simple to learn. You have a throttle in one hand along with a brake toggle in each hand for steering. You kite the wing and squeeze the throttle and off you go. Steering is done by pulling one brake toggle and landing is done by flaring just before you touch down pulling both toggles. To go higher you apply more gas to lose altitude you idle down. The landings can be easier than jumping off a kitchen table chair. If the engine fails which happens rarely you gently glide back to earth.
It takes the average Student around 10 days to solo.We do not push the lessons, We allow each student to learn at a safe pace It will take around 10-15 flights before you are Able to Fly un guided, and We all continue learning with every flight. We allow students to learn at a pace that suits them, combining field training hands on with about 10 hours of ground school. We teach theory of flight, Basic flight, Sight awareness, Weather to fly by, Engine maintenance and handling, Wing maintenance and handling, Kiting and much more. Our training sites are located in the Northern Illinois area. The training continues into the first few months and at no extra charge. If you would like we do offer advanced training, above and beyond the initial training at a rate of $50.00 per half day.As a weekend School it will take about a month or so to learn.This all depends on how much time you can devote to the learning process.
I am afraid of tall buildings, ladders, looking down at the mall second floor to first. I have been in small aircraft and large jets, Now in a paramotor. It is not like standing on a roof looking down. You do not get vertigo. It is more like relaxing in your easy chair and genlty rolling around the countryside. The feeling of flying is not realized at altitude. Anything over 50-100 feet and you can hardly tell you are moving. Close to the ground you realize that you are moving, but the safety of your wing takes away all fear. This is a very safe form of flight.
A paraglider is an eliptical Air Foil made from rip stop nylon, and lines that are nylon braided around a very strong mylar type center line. Each line is capable of holding allot of weight. The wing is also ribbed with mylar along the entire inner surface which gives the wing its shape when inflated. The openings in the leading edge allow air to enter the wing and it inflates like a pillow. The inner ribs have cutouts to allow the air inside the wing to circulate and thus keeping equal pressure in all cells. Once the wing is inflated it forms an air foil that has an eliptical shape or cresent. It now has the same lifting properties that an airplane would have. Air rushing over the top of the wing creates a lower pressure than on the bottom, and thus creats lift. The glider can fly as slow as 10 mph and as fast as 32mph. This is determined by the angle of attack, and the amount of thrust from the engine. More thrust means more angle of attack and results in more lift or altitude. The pilot is suspended under the wing about 15feet and acts as balast for the glider to stay pressurized. The forward motion in short is what keeps the glider flying. It is capable of stalls spins and even rolls when induced to do so. these are radical manuevers that are only perfomed by Highly Skilled acrobatic pilots.
The regulations that do govern ultralights are called FAR 103. Written by the FAA. In that they say that as an ultralight you cannot fly above 18,000', You cannot fly over any airspace from airports, and cannot fly over congested areas. The duration of a Paramotor depends on the amount of fuel you carry, and the mileage of your engine and pilot weight. Heavier pilots burn more fuel. The typical PPG carries about 2 gallons/10 liters of 2 cycle fuel & oil mixture. I can easily travel at 25MPH ground speed and in NO WIND that equals to 25 MPH. I fly a Sky Cruiser RDM and get about 1 1/2 to 2 hours of fuel so in this scenario I could go almost 50 miles. If you add a 5 mile per hour wind speed and go with the wind then add that to the total or almost 60 miles. We typically do Cross Country flying depending on wind and go 10-15 miles into the wind and then come back to the LZ(landing Zone)
In any sport, condition is a factor. In order to lift and carry the motor unit until lift off, Skill generally dictates the amount of time you actually carry the weight. Also wind conditions are a factor. In NO wind, you have to get the wing over head and then apply power until you are at flying speed. You will need to be able to run as the speed increases. If the winds are at say 8mph you can inflate the glider and only take a few steps and you're off. If you have back problems then you could always use a 3 wheel trike to launch. The trike goes in the air with you and you inflate the glider and roll to take off.Landings are the same. You will need to be able to spend time learning to kite the glider, and doing forward and reverse inflation practices. It does take a bit of stamina in the beginning, and as you build skills your tasks get simpler. I fly with pilots as young as 18 and as old as 68.

Training
Everyone learns at a different pace. We do not push you any harder than you are willing to train. It usually takes the average person about 3 weekends to solo
As a student of NIPPGI you will learn everything PPG related including, Airport operations, Basic aviation skills, Kiting, Motor maintenance and tuning, care for your glider
Call for scheduling. We train fridays from 4pm til dark, Saturdays and sunday from sun up to sun down. You can come out a get an overview, Take a tandem ride and see the entire operation at work.
